Same-Sex Marriage, Kim Davis, and My Palm Springs Story | 🍬 Soul Snack

A personal story of love, loss, and the ongoing fight for the right to marry — and live — free from someone else’s religion.

When the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in 2015, I found myself in Palm Springs, hand-in-hand with Thomas W. — a man with eyes like blue gems and a kindness that matched his beauty. For the first time in my life, I realized I could marry someone I loved… and it would be legal. That possibility was thrilling, terrifying, and, in the end, overshadowed by the weight of family disapproval. In this episode, I share that story — and why the current challenge to Obergefell v. Hodges, led by Kim Davis, hits so deeply. We’ll talk about the difference between religious freedom and religious coercion, how shame can shrink our lives, and why our love, autonomy, and rights are worth defending. Whether you’ve lived this fight or you’re an ally who cares, this is a reminder that we’re in it together — and that our love matters.

Please note, I used the incorrect verbiage in the episode, currently Kim Davis is petitioning the court, but there is no formal hearing and the court may not revisit her request.
